The Flying Child Inside Me

A short piece about reclaiming the lightness and fearless confidence of childhood.

When I was seven or eight, I used to jump down three or four steps at a time, and every single time, it felt as if I could fly. That effortless lightness, that freedom, that magical confidence lived in me for years.

And then, slowly, without warning, it disappeared. As I grew older, I noticed something painful: Forget flying—some days even living felt heavy.

Much later, I understood why.

When I was a child, my mother was diagnosed with an illness—an illness I now feel came more from unspoken emotions, suppressed pain, and unfulfilled dreams than from her body. Her emotional suffering took the shape of a “disease,” and my childhood quietly filled itself with fear.

That fear stayed with me for years. It followed me into adulthood and shaped my relationships, my choices, and almost everything I did. Life became something I performed with caution instead of living with freedom.

Through personal development and deep self-work, I finally saw the pattern. I understood where the fear came from. I understood why the flying feeling vanished.

And the moment awareness entered… everything began to shift.

Slowly, the part of me that once dared to fly began to return. And today, the flying child inside me is learning to open her wings again.
